About the Conference

The Sam Nujoma Campus of the University of Namibia, in partnership with Tshwane University of Technology (TUT), is hosting a high-impact, multidisciplinary conference that brings together scholars, policymakers, industry leaders, and practitioners. The conference seeks to address the interconnected challenges of climate change, food security, and sustainable economic development, with a special focus on coastal and developing regions.

By fostering cross-sector dialogue and promoting action-oriented research, this joint initiative aims to unlock innovative and inclusive solutions. It also seeks to highlight the untapped potential of the blue economy—spanning ocean, coastal, and aquatic resources—as a driver of resilience, food security, and sustainable growth in Africa.

The Conference Programme can be found here.

Our Keynote Speakers

Picture of Prof. Peter Teske

Prof. Peter Teske

Professor of Marine Genomics, Centre for Ecological Genomics and Wildlife Conservation, University of Johannesburg; South Africa

Prof. Peter Teske is a marine molecular ecologist who is affiliated with both the University of Johannesburg and Nelson Mandela University. For over two decades, he has conducted research on southern African and Australian marine fish and invertebrates.

In his keynote address "Using genomics to improve conservation management of southern African marine endemics", Prof. Teske will present current trends in marine genomic research across the region. Drawing on examples from his own research group or collaborative network, he will demonstrate how identifying often subtle molecular differences between regional populations can improve the management of both threatened and commercially valuable marine organisms. He will also explore how emerging genomic technologies are expanding the potential for conservation applications.

Picture of Dr. Anja Kreiner

Dr. Anja Kreiner

Chief Fisheries Biologist, National Marine Information and Research Centre, Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform; Namibia

Dr Anja Kreiner has over two decades of experience in environmental and fisheries research in Namibia. In her role as scientist at the National Marine Information and Research Centre (NatMIRC) and as Chair of the Marine Spatial Planning National Working Group, she has contributed to efforts aimed at strengthening Namibia's marine science agenda and promoting ecosystem-based management approaches.

Her research has focused on understanding the connections between environmental variability and the early life stages of pelagic fish, as well as zooplankton dynamics. In recent years, her interests have expanded to include coastal biodiversity. Dr Kreiner has been part of collaborative studies examining fish population dynamics, oceanographic patterns, and the long-term effects of climate and human activity on Namibia's marine and coastal environments.

In addition to her scientific work, Dr Kreiner has supported the development of cross-sectoral marine spatial planning in Namibia — working to bring together scientific knowledge, policy considerations, and local perspectives to guide more sustainable ocean use. She has also participated in regional cooperation efforts, including through the Benguela Current Convention.

In her keynote address, "Decades of Environmental Research in Namibia: Lessons Learned and Priority Research Gaps," Dr Kreiner will share reflections on key experiences and challenges from her time in the field. She will discuss lessons from ecosystem monitoring and fisheries research and outline areas where further study could help strengthen the resilience and sustainability of Namibia's marine environment.
