Choosing to study at the UNAM School of Accounting, is perhaps the best decision you have made in your career. You join an extensive network of students, faculty, and alumni ready to support your journey from classroom to career. With various rigorous, rewarding degree programs to choose from, you’ll enter the workplace with the knowledge and experience you need to excel in the field.
Presently the School is the second-largest academic school in the Faculty of Commerce Management and Law, with almost 30 lecturers and support staff. We serve an intake of about 800 new first-year students in full-time and part-time.
The School constantly strives to expand access for students to its programmes without sacrificing academic excellence.
The School has a record of excellent performance in the external professional examinations, taken by our alumni every year. As an example, the pass rate of our alumni Chartered Accountancy students is amongst the best every year.
Staff, in their personal capacity, and also the School as an entity, strive towards making a positive impact on both the community of Windhoek and on a national level.

Introduction
Welcome to the School of Business Management, Governance, and Economics. The School comprises 3 departments, which offer undergraduate, masters, and doctoral programmes in various disciplines.
The programmes are aimed at equipping students with skills in the fields of management, governance, and economics. It also leads in scholarly research output and community service that contribute to social and economic development in Namibia and beyond.
The graduates are trained to fill the gaps in the public and private sectors locally, regionally, and internationally. The School is actively engaged with relevant stakeholders, thereby ensuring translational knowledge and research output.
Department of Economics
Prof. Alfred K. Mukong
Associate Professor
Prof. Alfred Mukong is an Associate Professor of Economics, at the University of Namibia. He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Cape Town, MA Economics from Makerere University and BSc Economics from University of Buea. He has over 15 years of research and teaching experience.
He has been actively involved in grants writing and consultancies with national and international (UN, UNDP/WHO, UNFPA, UNICEF, ILO) organisations. He has published extensively in the areas of Health economics and policy, natural resource and environmental economics, gender and development, economics of tobacco control and financial inclusion.
Prof. Denis Nfor Yuni
Associate Professor
Prof. Denis Nfor Yuni, PhD, is an internationally recognised Economist and Associate Professor at the University of Namibia. He has over 15 years of cognate research and teaching experience across 3 research centres and 4 universities. With over 60 peer-reviewed publications, he specialises in international trade, development finance, and environmental economics.
He has provided consultancy services to several national and international organisations, including the United Nations University Institute for Natural Resources in Africa (UNU-INRA), UNDP, the European Union, IDRC, etc.
He has extensive experience in designing research projects and supervising quantitative and qualitative data collection. He is proficient in STATA, R, Python, EViews, Gretl & SPSS and has strong expertise in panel, time-series, and cross-sectional econometric analysis.
He has substantial experience in the supervision, teaching and external examination of Master's and doctoral theses in Economics and Business Administration. He previously served as the Research Pillar Coordinator of the National University of Lesotho - World Trade Organisation Research Chair (2022 - 2025).
Prof. Esau Kaakunga
Associate Professor
Prof. Esau Kaakunga is an Economist by profession. He obtained a Doctoral degree in Economics with emphasis on the Determinants of Long-Term Growth in Southern African Customs Union (SACU) Countries at the University of Natal, Durban. Prof. Kaakunga is currently an Associate Professor in Economics and the Associate Dean, School of Business Management, Governance & Economics at the University of Namibia.
Prof. Kaakunga's research activities are on Financial Sector Development, Poverty Alleviation, Public Sector Management and Economic Development. His work experience spans Bank of Namibia (Senior Economist), Namibia University of Science and Technology (Senior Lecturer) and Namibia Economic Policy Research Unit (Researcher). As part of his work in the academia, Kaakunga has lectured in the following areas, Econometrics, Economics of Growth and Development, Microeconomics, Econometrics, Mathematical Economics and Managerial Economics.
He was a member of various boards that include UNAM Council, UNAM Postgraduate Studies Committee, UNAM WTO Chair Advisory Committee, African Economic Research Consortium Academic Board. Prof. Kaakunga has published widely in academic journals such as Botswana Journal of Economics, South African Journal of Economics and Management Sciences, Journal of Economic and Financial Sciences, Journal for Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences, The Journal of American Business Review and The Business Review. He has provided consultancy services to international organizations, which include USAID, UNPD, UNECA & NEPAD Division, Institute for Global Dialogue and SADC.
Prof. Jacob M. Nyambe
Associate Professor
Prof. Jacob Nyambe is a seasoned Economist and an academic leader. He is a former Founding Executive Dean of the Faculty of Commerce, Management, and Law. Prof Nyambe is also a former Dean of the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences, and Head of Department of Economics. He previously served as a Senior Economic Researcher at NEPRU. He also worked in South Africa and conducted field surveys in Botswana, Lesotho, Eswatini, Kenya, Mozambique, Tanzania.
Prof Nyambe is an expert in quantitative economic policy, economics of growth, public finance, international economics, development finance, rural finance, livelihood analysis and regional integration and trade. He conducted consultancy services for the UNDP, FAO, Red Cross, African Peer Review Mechanism and Civil Society.
He holds a National Diploma, BSc, MSc, and PhD. In 2019, he was Visiting Lecturer at the University of Pretoria. In 2025, he secured the Erasmus Mobility Scholarship for research to the Freier and Humboldt Universities of Berlin. Prof Nyambe is a former DAAD scholarship beneficiary.
Dr. Canicio Dzingirai
Senior Lecturer
Dr. Canicio Dzingirai is a Senior Lecturer at University of Namibia, Economics Department. He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of the Witwatersrand, Masters, and Bachelor (Hons) in Economics as well as MSc in Banking and Financial Services. He also holds certifications from international training institutes like African Institute for Economic Development and Planning (IDEP), United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), United Nations Conference of Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and Institute for New Economic Thinking's Young Scholars Initiative (YSI). He teaches and supervises both undergraduate, and postgraduate students.
His areas of interest are Development Economics, Financial Economics, International Trade and Finance, Banking, Industrial Economics, Public Sector Economics, Institutional Economics and Applied Micro-and-Macroeconomics. He has extensively published in internationally referred journals related to his areas of interest.
He also attended and presented at various international conferences organized by UNECA, African Development Bank (AfDB), UNDP, Trade & Industrial Policy Strategies (TIPS). He is and has been actively engaged in grants and consultancies with governments, regional and international organizations including UNDP, UNECA, Commonwealth Local Government Forum (CLGF) and Macroeconomic and Financial Management Institute of Eastern and Southern Africa (MEFMI).
Dr. Ebenezer L. Wirba
Senior Lecturer
Ebenezer Lemven Wirba, PhD, is a Senior Lecturer in Economics at the University of Namibia. He teaches modules such as Econometrics, Intermediate Mathematical Economics, and Advanced Microeconomics, and supervises both undergraduate and postgraduate theses. He is a researcher affiliated with the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC), the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA), the Partnership for Economic Policy (PEP), and the United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics Research (UNU-WIDER).
He has also undertaken consultancy assignments for the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the African Development Bank. Dr Wirba holds a certification in Impact Evaluation from Université Laval, Canada, and a certification in Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) Analysis from the University of Florence, Italy.
He has published in reputable, economics-centric peer-reviewed journals such as Empirical Economics, Journal of International Development, Education Economics, Review of Development Economics, South African Journal of Economics, and African Development Review. His research interests include labour market issues, gender analysis, poverty, inequality, and impact evaluation.
Dr. Obrein M. Samahiya
Head of Department
Dr. Obrein M. Samahiya is an accomplished Economist and academic leader with several years of progressive experience spanning academia, research, and public service. Currently serving as Head of the Department of Economics at the University of Namibia, providing strategic and operational leadership in managing human and financial resources, academic programming, and staff development. He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Pretoria, with a research and publication record that advances understanding of education, inequality, and labour market dynamics in Southern Africa.
He has over a decade of experience in academia, including teaching a broad range of economics and quantitative courses, supervising undergraduate research, and contributing to institutional governance through active participation on departmental and school committees.
He has consulted for the International Labour Organisation (ILO), United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), Electricity Control Board of Namibia (ECB), and the Consortium for International Development in Education (CIDE), among others.
Dr. Sakaria Kalumbu
Senior Lecturer
Dr. Sakaria Angula Kalumbu is a Senior Lecture in the Economics department at the University of Namibia. He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Namibia, with research record on understanding both trade, Global and National Development, Monetary economics as well as over-all macroeconomics. He has over a decade of experience in academia, which includes lecturing a range of economics modules such as mathematical economics, Advances macroeconomics and others, as well as supervising undergraduate and post graduate research.
He also acted as the head of department and contributed actively to departmental and university faculty committees. He also involved in reviewed work for Scopus journals such as the Scientific Reviewer for the African Journal of Business and Economic Research (AJBER), Scientific Reviewer for the African Journal of Innovation and Entrepreneurship (AJIE) and others.
He has consulted for the Namibian Institute of Public Administration and Management (NIPAM) and the Consortium for International Development in Education (CIDE), among others.
Dr. Valdemar J. Undji
Senior Lecturer
Dr. Valdemar J. Undji is an Economist and a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Economics at the University of Namibia (UNAM). He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of the Western Cape, an MSc in Economics and a Bachelor of Economics (Honours) from UNAM.
He has over 9 years of university teaching experience, delivering courses in econometrics and a wide range of economics-related courses. In addition, he has extensive research experience, demonstrated through publications in internationally accredited journals and the successful supervision of both undergraduate and postgraduate research projects.
He has also contributed to several consultancies for UNAM, the Namibia Competition Commission, and the Africa Peer Review Mechanism. His research interests include applied economics, banking, finance, and econometric modelling, with a particular focus on financial risk management, illicit capital flows, public policy and climate change.
Mr. Milner S. Siboleka
Lecturer
Mr. Milner Siboleka is a Lecturer at the University of Namibia. Prior to joining the university, he consulted with the Namibia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI) providing research and policy advice on business environment, trade policy and advocacy under a position of a Senior Economist.
Mr. Milner also has considerable experience in portfolio management, market and policy research, having worked in various roles ranging economist to Research manager in the fund management industry and other related institutions including government.
He holds a Masters degree in Economic Policy Management from the University of Zambia in addition to industry certifications in trade facilitation, trade rules of origin, investment and program evaluation. His research interests include applied economics, contemporary issues like AI induced unemployment, climate change and income inequality.
Ms. Johanna Mumangeni
Lecturer
Mrs Johanna Mumangeni is a Lecturer in the Department of Economics at the university of Namibia. She holds a Master of Art (Economics) from University of Botswana and Bachelor of Economics from University of Namibia. She has over 20 years of university teaching experience, teaching Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, Public Economics, Monetary Economics, and Development Economics. Her research areas of interest lie on fiscal policy, macroeconomics, and development.
Ms. Josefina Nghuuyepa
Lecturer
Ms. Josefina Nghuuyepa is a Lecturer in the Department of Economics at the University of Namibia. Her research interests lie in macroeconomics, quantitative economics, and development economics, with a focus on economic modelling and policy analysis. She has professional experience in national accounts compilation and macroeconomic modelling and forecasting, which informs her teaching as well as her supervision of undergraduate research.

Introduction
The Namibia Business School (NBS), the number one business school in Namibia, was established in response to the needs of the Namibian market.
In 1999, the Founding Vice-Chancellor of the University of Namibia, Prof. Peter Katjavivi, assisted by the former Head of the Economics Department, Prof. Mohammed El Toukhy, joined forces with the FNB Foundation and entered into a collaboration agreement with the Maastricht School of Management in The Netherlands to offer an Executive MBA Programme at UNAM.
Since 2000, many students have graduated with more postgraduate qualifications including Diplomas, MBA (with specialisations), and DBA. Namibia Business School offers business Executive Programmes tailor-made to suit the requirements of the industry in the 21st century.

The Faculty is one of the largest at UNAM and arguably most significant, in terms of its contribution to national human resource development in fields related to business, public policy and Law. The objectives of the Faculty are to promote excellence in teaching and research, to inculcate a critical disposition and ability for creative problem-solving, to educate and train high level human resources in support of sustainable development and community service and to produce responsible citizens with a healthy respect for human dignity.
