Mechanical Engineering

Bachelor of Science (Honours)

Introduction:

The curriculum of the degree of Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (Honours) aims to produce Graduate Engineers with knowledge, skills and technical abilities in Mechanical Engineering and who can competently work in mechanical engineering design, manufacturing technology, industrial management, production systems, applications of fluid and thermal machines and research techniques, thus providing the potential for further professional training towards the requirements for registration as Professional Mechanical Engineers. The programme is designed with the objective of meeting the national and regional needs for education in Mechanical Engineering. The programme offers students a complementary and multidisciplinary approach to studying the broad area of Mechanical Engineering through modules covering Engineering Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, Basic Sciences, Computing and Information Technologies, Complementary Studies and design and analysis and specifically the following areas of the discipline: Engineering Drawings, Machine Design, Mechanical Design, Modelling and Control Systems, Strength of Materials, Material Science, Finite Element Methods, Vibration and Noise, Fluid Mechanics, Heat Transfer, Energy Systems, Numerical Fluid Dynamics and Thermo-fluid Dynamics.

The graduates of this programme are sought by employers in almost all sectors of the engineering industry. These include: Manufacturing industry, Automotive industry, Chemical industry, Construction industry, Defence industry, Electronics industry, Mining industry, Marine industry, Materials and metals industry, Medical and Pharmaceuticals industry, Aerospace industry, Rail industry and Utilities industry. After registration as Professional Engineers, they may also set up their own engineering consulting companies.

Offered at:

  • Eng. José Eduardo dos Santos Campus

Requirements:

The admission requirements are indeed in line with the programme’s academic demands and the qualifications of the incoming students. Students who do not meet the requirements for direct entry into Year 1 of Engineering are first admitted into the Pre-Engineering Year at the Faculty of Science to prepare them for mathematics, physics, chemistry, statistics, computer skills and English communication. The minimum requirements for Pre-engineering and for Year 1 of Engineering are given below. The minimum entry requirements for admission into the Pre-Engineering Year are as follows:

  • At least a “B” symbol in Mathematics and “C” symbol in Physical Science (or at Least a “C” symbol in Mathematics and “B” symbol in Physical Science); plus a at least a “C” symbol in English at NSSC-O level (IGCSE level) or equivalent qualification, or
  • A score of “3” in Mathematics and in Physical Science (or 3 in Mathematics and a 4 in Physical Science or vise versa) plus a score of 4 or better in English at NSSC-H level (HIGCSE) or equivalent qualification. If English was not taken at NSSC-H, at least a “C” symbol in English at NSSC-O level will be required
  • At least 27 points in five subjects and meeting the above requirements for Mathematics and Physical Science, and a symbol of “D” symbol in English at NSSC-O level (IGCSE level) or equivalent qualification.
  • Students doing the UNAM Foundation Programme are eligible for admission into Pre-Engineering Year, provided they meet the minimum entry requirements.
  • Admission to the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology through Mature Age Mode is possible only with those who possess valid Grade 12 Certificates.

The minimum entry requirements for admission into the First Year of Engineering are as

follows:

  • Successful completion of the Pre-Engineering Programme, or
  • A score of 2 or better in Mathematics and Physical Science and a score of 4 or better in English at NSSC-H level (HIGSCE level) or equivalent qualifications. If English was not taken at NSSC-H level, at least a “C” symbol in English at NSSC-O level will be required.
  • At least 30 points in five subjects and meeting the above requirements for Mathematics and Physical Science, and a symbol of “D” symbol in English at NSSC-O level (IGCSE level) or equivalent qualification.
  • Students who have completed the First Year of Science at UNAM with passes in Physics, Chemistry and in all Mathematics and Statistics modules maybe admitted to the First Year of Engineering provided they have at least a “C” symbol in English at NSSC-O level. This criterion will only be applied when there is capacity to admit.

Note: A Science student who has no Re-admission into the Faculty of Science does not qualify for admission into the Faculty of Engineering & Information Technology.

Curriculum Structure:

The programme for the degree of Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (Honours) runs over four (4) academic years, which are made up of a total of eight (8) semesters. A semester consists of 14 weeks of lectures plus 2 weeks of university examinations. Year 1 of study (semester I and II) is common to all engineering disciplines. In Year 2 to 4 (semesters III to VII), students take disciplines-specific modules and a few common modules. There are no taught modules in Semester VII since this semester is fully dedicated to Research and Design Projects. A 16 Credit module requires a total of 56 hours of Lecture (L) plus 28 hours of Tutorials (T) or Labs Practical Session (PS)). A 12 Credit module requires a total of 42 hours of Lecture plus 28 hours of Tutorials or Practical Session. An 8 Credit module requires a total of 28 hours of Lecture plus 14 hours of Tutorials or Practical Session. As part of Continuous Assessment (CA), students must do at least two (2) written Tests in addition to some assignments and Lab reports, where applicable.

Duration of Studies:

The minimum duration for the Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree programme is four (4) years. The Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (Honours) must be completed within six (6) years of full-time study for students who begin at Year 1 of Engineering or seven (7) years for students who begin with Pre-engineering.
