The Department of Language and Literature Studies is a cosmopolitan Department comprising nine language sections, namely; Afrikaans, English, French, German, Khoekhoegowab, Oshiwambo, Otjiherero, Portuguese and Spanish. The Department offers a variety of courses in linguistics, applied linguistics and literature in all the nine languages. These courses feed into various undergraduate programmes offered in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and other Faculties. In addition, the Department offers postgraduate studies in Afrikaans, English and German. Some of the Department's outreach programmes include the English Language Proficiency Programme (ELPP), NAMTESOL Association and the National High Schools' SpellQuizBee Competition. Staff members' research interests revolve around linguistics, applied linguistics and literature, according to each member's area of specialization.
