The Department of Early Childhood and Lower Primary Education is housed on five campuses. Each campus specializes in certain Namibian languages in order to meet the Ministry of Education's requirement for mother tongue instruction in pre and lower primary / junior primary education. At Katima Mulilo, Silozi is offered; Hifikepunje Pohamba Campus in Ongwediva offers Oshikwanyama and Oshindonga, and Rundu lecturers offer Rukwangali, Thumbukushu and Rumanyo. At Khomasdal campus there are lecturers for Khoekhoegowab, Otjiherero, Oshikwanyama and Oshindonga, and Afrikaans. The Southern campus in Keetmanshoop will provide Afrikaans and Khoekhoegowab as well. Besides the different languages at the different campuses, the B.Ed coursework for Pre-and Lower Primary education is the same for all campuses, since the same course outlines are followed at each campus and all students write the same examination papers.
Lecturers are committed to deliver quality education and the fact that question papers are moderated ensures this goal. This B.Ed Degree runs over four years, after which an Honors degree is obtained. The coursework includes the making of the necessary teaching aids, practical sessions, theory and teaching methods as well as school based studies. Students are acquainted with all the school subjects as well as other academic subjects to build well rounded skills and qualities.
All students who have a B.Ed degree (Pre-Lower Primary, Upper Primary, Senior Secondary) will receive the same salary. Qualified pre-and lower primary teachers are sought after and highly regarded.
